Varicose Veins

About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly develop in the legs and feet due to increased pressure in the veins. They often appear blue or dark purple and may bulge or look raised under the skin. While they can be a cosmetic concern for some, varicose veins may also cause discomfort such as aching, heaviness, throbbing, swelling, or cramping. In more advanced cases, they can lead to skin discoloration or even ulcers if left untreated.

These veins form when tiny one-way valves inside the veins become weak or damaged. Instead of flowing smoothly back to the heart, blood can pool in the vein, causing it to stretch and twist. Several factors can contribute to this condition, including genetics, age, pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, and excess weight. Although varicose veins are common, they can affect quality of life—but modern treatments offer effective relief with minimal downtime.

Risk Factors

Weak or damaged vein valves:
When the valves inside your veins don’t function properly, blood can flow backward and pool, causing the veins to enlarge and twist.

Age:
As you get older, your veins lose elasticity and the valves may weaken, increasing the risk of varicose veins.

Pregnancy:
As you get older, your veins lose elasticity and the valves may weaken, increasing the risk of varicose veins.

Prolonged standing or sitting:
Staying in one position for long periods makes it harder for blood to flow upward, raising vein pressure and the chance of varicose veins.

Treatment Options

Sclerotherapy:
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat smaller varicose veins and spider veins. A special solution is injected directly into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and gradually fade from view. The body naturally reroutes blood through healthier veins, and over time, the treated vein is absorbed and disappears.

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT):
EVLT is a highly effective, minimally invasive treatment for larger varicose veins. It involves using ultrasound guidance to insert a small laser fiber into the vein. The laser delivers targeted heat, sealing the vein shut and redirecting blood flow to healthier veins. EVLT is typically done under local anesthesia, takes less than an hour, and allows patients to return to normal activities shortly after the procedure with minimal discomfort.

The SAC team specializes in treating varicose veins with a personalized, patient-centered approach. Using the latest minimally invasive techniques, we focus on relieving symptoms, improving appearance, and enhancing overall vein health.

Who Can Benefit from Varicose Vein Treatment?

Anyone experiencing discomfort, swelling, or visible vein changes in their legs may benefit from varicose vein treatment. You don’t have to live with daily leg fatigue or the frustration of hiding your legs due to bulging or discolored veins. Addressing varicose veins early can also help prevent complications like skin changes, ulcers, or blood clots.

Treatment is ideal for people who may not have painful symptoms but are bothered by the appearance of varicose veins. Whether your concerns are cosmetic or medical, options like sclerotherapy or EVLT can restore comfort and confidence with little to no downtime.
